Weird coincidence - I figured these would be of interest to you, Pete, but I never made the connection to the Washington State Reformatory in Monroe.

As far as the broader collection, the rest of the work isn't mugshots, but rather a much broader collection of other found photos. I'm going to do my best to get the project out, but as I said in the post, I probably shouldn't even have posted these as I'm not even sure how public they want the work to be.

As far as how they got to Paris, your guess is as good as mine, though I imagine these were widely handed out at the time, and they've probably made their way all over the place. I love also that the text is handwritten on the back of two of them - I guess, though, that this was common enough, or widely distributed enough, to necessitate actually printing on the back of the cards..

Nick. Whoooa! These are really cool. Washington State Reformatory is the prison in which I volunteer teach. It's in Monroe about 40 minutes from Seattle.

In fact, tomorrow is the 100th anniversary of the institution. It is the second oldest prison in Washington.

I'm going to be badgering you for follow ups and delivery of an awesome project to the wider web world!

I wonder how the mugshots got to Paris?

I'm tempted to say that Doug Rickard has been getting a hard time - not to entirely defend him, but these kind of conflicts are inevitable. Rickard is providing a service to the photography community at large, as evidenced by the blog's success and by the huge following it has generated. Still, though, AD Coleman has it right - Rickard has not asked permission for a large chunk of material on the site and on facebook, and though alot of this stuff would never be seen by most of us unless we tracked down the obscure catalogs in which they originally appeared, where do you draw the line at what is acceptable fair use? I suppose I wouldn't be pissed if my work, in whatever capacity, appeared on the site, providing there was a link to my site (which there generally isn't on ASX, it must be said, though I understand how difficult it is to find a web presence for alot of critics), but I would be enraged if my photographs appeared on a non-photography site.

Are we giving ASX a pass because Rickard is part of our community? His use of Facebook is only one step further along the same road than the main site is...

We'll keep having these discussions until we have a clear and updated copyright act in the US. I suppose it's too much to hope that it will come soon, though...

Hi Pete,
Yeah, I hadn't considered that aspect of it - though I probably should have.

I suppose I was coming to it from the angle of "gee, isn't it great what's available on the internet" which is what most internet users come to it on. Which is why it's good for us to be thinking through this stuff more. Whoops.

Anyways, Facebook is not exactly known for its fidelity to its users privacy settings, nor is it clear what their rights are regarding the images that are published on the site...

Still, though, it must be said that Doug Rickard is providing a valuable service agregating all of this info, and though Facebook may or may not be an appropriate forum for it, finding a way to effectively engage with social media is increasingly part of being on the internet...

Nick

Bryan Fornhals of La Pura Vida brought up the issue of ASX publishing photographers galleries on FB last year:

and

http://lapuravidagallery.com/blog/2009/08/update-american-suburb-x-copyright-facebook/

I bring this up because I don't think Doug Rickard has ever answered the question of copyright and usage of the images he posted.

ASX is a very important resource. I appreciate DR's bravery in stepping out and pushing essays that would otherwise be "lost". I don't understand why he has branched on to Facebook with the publication of images, "some authorised and others not".

It is dangerous territory.

I would post photogs. work on my blog, but not submit it to the FB global-silo. It seems a bit tacky and disrespectful.

Nice one, Nick. Gerry posted this on FB. It's just as bad for writers and editors – everyone thinks they can get you to churn out content for them in exchange for "exposure." Yeah right. Not only does this bs limit creative work to people who have outside means, but it also limits the profits you can make once you do get paying work, because there are so many trust-fund brats willing to do it for free.

Check this rant from Harlan Ellison: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mj5IV23g-fE

This is also rampant in another area of the arts field: museums. Museums as an institution pay a lot of lip service to increasing diversity in the field (i.e. not just rich people) but with these same policies--volunteer until you are granted an entry level position! Remain in that entry level position until you are 50!--they ensure that nothing will actually change.
Check this one out, it is ridiculous and to think that some people WILL do the job:

Calling Student Photographers (north beach / telegraph hill)

Local independent ad agency seeking aspiring professional photographer to shoot some of our outdoor ad placements for internal use. Shots need to be digital, hi-re, clear, crisp and per any outlined specs. (eg. whether we'd like during the day; night; people in shot, etc.) Agency will outline details of location of outdoor boards and specific details as appropriate.
Will pay $10 per accepted shot and agency retains all usage rights.
Transportation of some kind required.

This is an ongoing need; but the immediate one is week of 2/9 for 6 placements though we might want multiple of each.

Please send your resume and a sample of your work to the above Craig's list address.

Thank you!

I agree with what you're saying - I too want an audience and I do think that those who look at this site and participate in the online photo world are more than just those who write. I just feel that the jump from writing for oneself and writing to be paid is a bigger jump than it seems: It's not just a matter of earning money for something that a blogger already does, but seems to me to completely change the relationship between blogger and audience.
Anyways, I do think I am getting a little ahead of myself - no one's figured out how to make money from this even if they wanted to, so the point is somewhat academic.
Though there are interesting things out there: See here.

'For me, blogging is, and will probably remain to be, a solipsistic affair with the expectation of an audience.'

How cannot that be the starting point of this kind of occupation? I agree that the feeling might stay, but others join, and hopefully prevail. I don't necessarily expect people to comment, I tend to not step into the occasional comments and prefer to leave the discussion to readers (never needed to moderate, the few times it happened it was carried on properly).
I want people to read what I write, and then go on with their own research and photographic hopping. I want people to write me, share their thoughts, their work, and it's happening. I want an audience, of course, and it is growing beyond the google traffic.

Remuneration? We'll see.

Nicholas, I had a similar experience while writing a blog for a recent residency, one post title that got a massive response (in search terms) was 'What makes a great image?'. It was meant as a rhetorical question rather than a piece of technical advice but it tells me a lot about what people search the internet for. Although it received a lot of visitors it received no comments.
